  3. This evoked memories of my Indian Princess dress I wore during our town's centennial. Many moons ago, believe me. People don't think of Iowa as being much of a Native-American-heritage state, but I grew up going to pow-wows and making beaded moccasins. I had a darned good drum, too. I knew the names of people like Chief Poweshiek and learned the history of tribes like the Meskwakie in school.

    It always tickles me that some "progressives" think they're so ahead of the curve with their "new" emphasis on Native Americans. We may still have called them Indians, but we knew them as people and honored their customs. ;)
